How I became a shamanic practitioner
No one ever tells you how the spiritual path is going to be. You hear a whisper one day which you don’t understand, it becomes a gentle call which you ignore, so you can carry on with your comfortable life and then one day something traumatic happens, the call becomes a scream that propels you to finally listen and take action to connect with spirit.
It was the winter of 2001 the first year of the new millennium, I was travelling around Mexico with my boyfriend Richard, Siobhan (from girl band Bananarama) and a man who went by the name of Wildcat Will. We had been visiting the sacred sites and we were at Chitchen Itza in the gift shop. A tiny, handmade book on the bottom shelf, away from all the glossy brochures caught my eye and I picked it up. This book was written by the former keeper of the site, a man called Miguel Angel and it described the cosmic relevance of the pyramids from the Mayan perspective. Something in me was moved…. we’d stumbled on a little piece of magic.
Captivated, Richard and I devoured the book and noticed at the back, the address of the author. He lived in Merida, a local town near where we were heading in the Yucatan Peninsula. Driven by curiosity, adventure and some unseen force, we told Siobhan and Will that we would detour and decided to track him down.
A few days later, we were knocking at the door of Miguel’s house. He was home. A slim and kind looking man, with longish hair and spectacles, like a gentle Mexican professor. “Hello?” he looked at us quizzically … “can I help you?” With book in hand, we explained excitedly how much we loved it and how interested we were to know more. “You’d better come in then” he said. After a cup of tea and some niceties, Miguel agreed to tutor us.
Richard and I went to Miguel’s house every afternoon to be schooled in the traditional Mayan philosophy and teachings. We covered everything from the calendar, to astrology, the history of our species, ceremonies, meditations, astral travelling and so much cosmic wisdom, my tiny mind was blown. What I didn’t realise at the time, was that we had just been given a crash course in Mayan shamanism. On our last afternoon, we did a final guided meditation with Miguel, he drummed a soothing beat and took us to the upper world to receive a special gift that we could take with us. I saw a sign, three circles in a cube, which was duly noted.
We said our goodbyes, put the experience away and carried on to Tulum, to continue on to sun, sea and tequila. I didn’t know then, that some cosmic seeds had been planted and they would remain in the soil till 2018.
The following year Richard and I split. I was devastated; it was my first proper heart-‐break and I wasn’t coping very well. Siobhan recommended her acupuncturist Sue, in desperation I went for some treatment. It turned out that Sue was also a Reiki Master and combined this with her work with needles. Sue invited us both to train with her and I found myself on a course with Siobhan that following week. That was how my journey with healing began, quite by accident. Nevertheless, I quickly became hooked and reiki quietly became a personal passion over the years. However, after more than a decade of honing my reiki healing skills, there was another call that was starting to get louder. I experienced some personal tragedies and the reiki wasn’t enough for the grief … this time I listened and began working with a shamanic practitioner in London. The Chelsea Shaman was straightforward and down to earth, we worked together over several years until the calling was crystal clear, I wanted to be able to do what he did.
This is how I came to be at the Four Winds Light Body School, training in Shamanic Energy Medicine. I wanted to take my existing experience with energy healing to the next level and this is exactly what happened. The school was founded by an extraordinary scientist, anthropologist and shaman Alberto Villoldo, who spent decades studying with indigenous groups in the Amazon and Andes. The school’s curriculum is the result and synthesis of all this experience and wisdom. He is also extremely passionate about the neuroscience behind a lot of the teachings as well as the nutrition needed to support the shamanic work. Coming from a family of traditional medics, I felt this was an important addition to my new-found education.
The lineage that the students are connected to is the Q’ero tradition. They are a small community that live in the mountains of Peru. Shamanism is their way of life, the teaching passed down orally for generations and, until this century, kept within the community. The elders received instruction that they were permitted to share their wisdom with the world, in order to save their beloved mother earth, which is how these teachings were given to Alberto to share with the students in his school. I was very relieved to see that the Q’ero community approved of the work and were delighted that we wanted to learn their wisdom. There was no issue of cultural appropriation whatsoever. We worked with them in our training and received sacred blessings, healings and rites from them, to help us in our journey.
The shamans kit is called a Mesa – which is a cloth that houses special stones that are used in the work. If you had told me last year, that I would become extremely attached to a collection of rocks, I would not have believed you, but I have. These stones become charged with healing ability and they are the very personal tools of the trade. The teachings work through the four directions of the compass, working with 3 stones in each. We started in the south, concentrating on shedding our old skins like a serpent, then onto the west, dealing with our shadows, being fearless like a jaguar then onto the north, finding stillness in chaos like a hummingbird, then onto the east where we see a bigger life picture from above, like an eagle. These animal archetypes are revered by the Q’ero, they inspire and inform each of the directions and the wisdom within them.
In the first week, our teacher invited us to create an outside altar in nature, I created a beautiful frame with flowers and leaves, placing my first 3 stones in the middle. I stood back to view my creation and then felt shivers up my spine. I realized I was looking at the gift given to me all those years ago in the Mayan meditation. Spirit must have known back then, where it wanted me to go, but needed me to live and experience the highs and lows of life first. I saw the big map of my life, from a high vantage point, eagle style and in a flash moment of clarity, it was clear – I was in the right place.
The work was intense and difficult, but also joyous and liberating… I’ve never explored myself and my psyche in such depth before, why would I? It’s a training that schools you in the ways of the universe and the magic in nature. You learn specific techniques you need to practice shamanic energy medicine and whilst learning, you grow yourself. Like anything you can have the tools, but it’s how you use them and how you evolve that matters. The medicine Iexperienced was unlike anything before, it healed my core and deep cleaned my energy field.
Shamanism was defined by one of my teachers as “seeing the aliveness in all things” you don’t need a particular indigenous outfit or traditional hut to practice it, as I had previously thought. I could take this back to Harley St. central London and work with city dwellers who needed help. I looked around the room at the group I was learning with, all ages, all nationalities, all manner of styles… a bit like plain clothes officers, you really wouldn’t know from the outside that we were baby shamans in training.
I’ve been handed the privilege and rites to practice this ancient energy medicine and I learnt that it’s less about a title and more about the teachings, to pass on the wisdom to help the earth and humanity. I can continue wearing the same clothes and living in London, as long as I connect to spirit to honour the lineage I’m a part of now, it’s about what’s inside that counts.
It’s been a long road to get to this place, where I can offer shamanic energy medicine from a place of credible training, lived experience and deep integrity – such is the transformational work I share to my clients at The Calmery. If you’d like to explore it for yourself, don’t hesitate to book a complimentary call on the booking page.
